This last weekend I wrapped up my first overnight trip with the CMC backpacking group I am a part of. This was a great trip, with some good education on back country navigation, how to properly use maps, read terrain, triangulation with a compass, and off trail trekking.
This group is a blast to be with, I am sure we scared away most of the animals from our area by constant laughter.
We did some navigation to the top of a hill near camp to find an abandoned mining lodge, and associated mine. Pretty cool looking cabin, but the mine shaft itself was very sketchy. The big triangle you see in the GPS plot was the navigation exercise. Each leg was a different method of navigating. I had my GPS with me but it was kept in my pocket and not used for this.
